Gold Plated vs Gold Vermeil Jewellery?

Gold Plated: any base metal (Copper, Brass, Bronze, Silver etc) with a layer of Gold equal to or greater than 0.5 microns ( 0.0005 mm) in thickness. No purity requirements. 

Gold Vermeil: solid 999 Fine or 925 Sterling Silver with a layer of Gold equal to or greater than 2.5 microns in thickness. The purity of the Gold must be 10ct or higher. It is not recommended to use 24ct Gold when plating jewellery as higher purity Gold is softer and and more likely to scratch and wear away with time.

By applying 3 microns of 18ct Gold, items will be more durable than most available vermeil jewellery - pieces appear solid Gold but are lighter to wear and more accessible.
